The story of Wilma Rudolph is directly relevant to today’s startups, businesses, sales, marketing and other folks.

Because we dream.

And we have to fight all odds to make it happen.

Here are 6 lessons from the lady herself:

One

Never underestimate the POWER OF DREAMS and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.

– Wilma Rudolph

Two

I ran and ran and ran every day, and I acquired this sense of DETERMINATION, this sense of spirit that I would never, never give up, no matter what else happened.

– Wilma Rudolph

Three

The triumph can’t be had without the STRUGGLE.

– Wilma Rudolph

Four

It doesn’t matter WHAT you’re trying to accomplish. It’s all a matter of discipline. I was determined to discover what life held for me beyond the inner-city streets.

-Wilma Rudolph

Five

Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose.  NOBODY GOES UNDEFEATED ALL THE TIME. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.

– Wilma Rudolph

Six

I loved the feeling of freedom in running, the fresh air, the feeling that THE ONLY PERSON I’M COMPETING WITH IS ME.

– Wilma Rudolph

Summarizing the lessons from the story of the great legend, Wilma Rudolph:

  • Chase your dream, you have the potential
  • Never, never, never give up
  • Struggle is the key to triumph
  • It doesn’t matter what you are trying to achieve
  • No one is undefeatable all the time
  • The competition is between you and you

Especially, I am besotted with the last point, because it so resonates with me:

Whether individual or organization, you are not competing with someone else.

You are competing with yourself – a previous version of yourself.

For Wilma, it was not Wilma vs. Jutta.
It was Wilma vs. Wilma.
It was the Wilma who wanted to win three medals vs. the Wilma who had won two medals.

It doesn’t have to be Facebook vs. Google, Apple vs. Samsung, one startup vs. another, or one individual vs. another.

It has to be Facebook vs. Facebook, iPhone vs. iPhone, Android vs. Android, and so on.

And, of course, YOU vs. YOU.
